Where should I put read-only files?

Formulating effective strategies for the placement of read-only files within PDM

Establishing coherent destinations for read-only files within a PDM vault may appear challenging initially, but applying a logical approach significantly simplifies PDM administration.

Efficiently designed vaults typically incorporate a root-level folder designated for files that primarily remain in a read-only state for all users. Items like CAD libraries, CAD seed files, default drawing formats, ECO templates, and more can be excellent candidates for this designated location. Below is an illustration of a read-only directory hierarchy as an example:

Here is the first level of the read-only directory structure. COTS is the upper level of the CAD libraries.

Utilizing the PDM vault for user-specific SolidWorks settings management is an effective means of reducing day-to-day administrative tasks. In the image below, take notice of the folder names within the SolidWorks Mechanical directory, which directly correspond to the File Locations options in the SolidWorks Options dialog. Exporting these settings into a registry file aligns with the IT deployment strategy discussed in this blog article.
